Production Process

Maca is a small root vegetable and is grown in harsh climates and at high altitudes typically 3,500 meters or more above sea level. Both the leaves and the root of the plant can be used, although maca is primarily harvested for the root. Once harvested, the root is cleaned, cut, dehydrated and milled into a fine powder. Gelatinized maca differs from raw maca powder in the production process. In order to obtain gelatinized maca powder, maca is cooked down, removing the starch. This process makes the powder much easier to digest.

Health Benefits

While the benefits of the plant are still being researched, it has been used for at least 3,000 years in the Andean region to improve fertility, anemia, sexual dysfunction and hormone imbalance. Despite the difference in the production process, there is no significant nutritional difference between raw and gelatinized maca powders.

Product Information

Known as the “superfood of the Andes,” maca is popular among Peruvian natives. It has a sweet and nutty smell and taste but can be used in a variety of applications. Glucosinolates, flavonoids, amino acids, proteins and fiber are the most active ingredients in maca powder, making it an excellent nutritional supplement. The glucosinolates in maca have also been known to have anticarcinogenic properties.

Product Use

Maca powder can be added to nearly anything, including: yogurt, smoothies, juices, coffee, granola and museli, oatmeal, soup, and more. It can also be used in cooking and baking. When using maca powder for the first time, it’s best to add one teaspoon at a time, until you find your preferred flavor. It can also be put in tablet or pill form.
